Reconstructive surgery dates back to 3000 BC in India, whereby they performed skin grafting on some parts of the body such as, the nose, ears and even hands.

In the World War period, doctors who took part in treating the victims of war formed an association, The American Association of Plastic Surgery whereby they pushed against the unregulated plastic surgery procedures. Major strides in the advancement on plastic surgery began after World War One that came up from many injuries from the victims of war. Currently, there are many major advancements in the field of plastic surgery.

A total of about 10 % of the people who undergo plastic surgery account for men, while women account for 90% of the people who demand these services. Nose reshaping and augmentation of the breasts are the most popular forms of plastic surgery witnessed today.

The former U.S. president Bill Clinton stated through a bill that plastic surgery be covered under an insurance policy. This came to the much relieve of many plastic surgeons and to many patients of the same, who in event got covered just in case the surgery went wrong. The bill also covered breast augmentation in achieving symmetry between two breasts.

Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery both have different practice goals, founded on a specific set of procedures. It states that the procedure of certifying a cosmetic surgeon and that of plastic surgeon must be distinct and different. Plastic surgery training is completed through a post-graduate program while on the other hand cosmetic surgery training is completed after residency training.
